Yiwu Freight Forwarder and Shipping Terms Explained
A freight forwarder and a sourcing agent are different jobs, usually done by different companies. What each one does, how we work alongside the forwarder you choose, and what LCL, FCL, DDP and door to door actually mean.
Half the people who search for a Yiwu freight forwarder actually need something else, and the emails we receive prove it. They describe a job that is partly sourcing, partly quality checking and partly freight, and address it all to “the forwarder”. Fair enough, from outside China the roles blur. But they are different jobs, usually done by different companies. This page explains what a freight forwarder does, what we do, and what the terms in a freight quote actually mean.
What a freight forwarder does
A freight forwarder is a booking and routing specialist. Forwarders buy space from shipping lines, airlines and rail operators, combine cargo from many customers, arrange the transport documents, and manage the handovers between a warehouse in China and a port or address in your country. A Yiwu shipping company of this kind lives on volume and carrier relationships. When a vessel is full or a schedule changes, the forwarder finds the alternative.
What a forwarder does not do is choose your products, negotiate with a booth in Futian market, check goods against a sample, or chase a late supplier. That is not their job.
What we do, and why it is a different job
We are a sourcing and buying agent, a registered company in China with our own staff in Yiwu and our own warehouse and consolidation space. Our work is on the goods side: finding products, placing and following orders, receiving and checking deliveries, and building the shipment carton by carton until it is ready to move. We are not a freight forwarder and we do not present ourselves as one.
The two jobs meet at our warehouse door. When your cargo is ready, it is booked through a forwarder, one we work with or one you already use, and from there the forwarder carries it while we stay accountable for the order as a whole. We work alongside the forwarder you choose rather than replacing them, and hand over what a forwarder wants: counted, measured and marked cartons with a packing list that matches the physical cargo. Our fee is a commission of roughly 4% to 10% of order value, quoted per order, or a monthly arrangement for recurring buyers, agreed in writing.
Do you need a forwarder, an agent, or both
If you already have a supplier, checked goods and export-ready cartons, you need a Yiwu freight agent or forwarder and little else. If you need products found, orders managed and cargo prepared, you need an agent like us, with the freight then booked through forwarders as part of the same service. The freight mechanics themselves, the truck run to Ningbo or Shanghai, the rail option to Europe, the shipping documents and the CBM arithmetic, each have their own post on our blog.
The vocabulary in your freight quote
Yiwu international shipping has its own shorthand, and quotes assume you speak it. These are the terms buyers most often ask us to translate.
LCL shipping and FCL shipping
FCL means full container load: the container is yours alone, loaded and sealed at the warehouse, opened at destination. LCL means less than container load: your cartons share a container with other shippers’ cargo. Neither is right in general. LCL shipping suits a volume of a few cubic metres, since paying for a whole container would mean paying for air. FCL shipping starts to make sense as your volume approaches a container’s working capacity, because a sealed box travels with less handling. Very small shipments are dominated by minimum charges either way, which is why consolidating goods into one load often beats shipping twice.
Door to door shipping
Door to door means the quote covers the journey from the origin warehouse to your address rather than stopping at a port. It describes the endpoints, not everything in between, and two door to door quotes can include different things. Ask what sits in the middle: who handles the import steps, whether unloading is covered, and what still needs your action at destination. A door to door shipping quote is only comparable to another when both are itemised.
DDP, used carefully
DDP is a commercial delivery term. In a DDP arrangement the quoting party takes responsibility for delivering the goods to the agreed address, with the import side of the journey inside their price rather than left to you. Buyers like the simplicity of one number, and for small shipments it is easy to see why.
Two cautions belong next to that simplicity. First, DDP describes who arranges and pays under the contract. It does not change what your country asks of your goods, and costs folded into the price are still costs. Second, when someone else handles the import side in your name, you know less about how it was done, and you are still the importer at your end. So treat DDP shipping as one option to price against the alternatives, and ask your own customs broker or freight forwarder how it would work for your goods in your country. Nothing on this page is customs advice.
Common questions
Are you a freight forwarder?
No. We are a sourcing and buying agent with our own warehouse in Yiwu. Freight is booked through forwarders, and we manage that booking and the cargo preparation around it.
Can I use my own freight forwarder?
Yes, and clients regularly do. We prepare and consolidate the cargo, hand it to your nominated forwarder with a matching packing list, and coordinate the handover dates.
Should I choose LCL or FCL?
Volume decides most of it. A few cubic metres points to LCL, a volume near a container’s capacity points to FCL, and in between it is worth pricing both. Send us the cargo details and we will show the options side by side.
Is DDP cheaper than handling the import side myself?
Neither is cheaper by definition. DDP moves costs inside one quoted price rather than removing them, so the honest comparison is the full landed cost both ways. Ask for itemised quotes and confirm the details with your own broker.
What does your Yiwu shipping service include?
Cargo received, checked, measured and consolidated at our warehouse, freight quoted through forwarders before booking, documents prepared from the China side, and tracking relayed until arrival. The import side in your country stays with you and your broker.
